New York City Subway Tokens
In 1953, the New York Subway system rates went up from a dime to 15 cents which required the sum of multiple coins. Instead of making the subway turnstiles work with a dime and a nickel, or three nickels, the subway station engineers decided that it would be much easier to create their own 15 cent subway token. And thus the New York Subway token was born.
With every major rate hike, the subway system produced a new coin design. In 1970, a larger version of the original Y token came with a 30 cent fare. When the rates went up to $1.00 in 1986, a new token with a grey round metal center plug arrived, and was dubbed the bull's eye. The final version of the token came in 1995 with a $1.50 fare, and had a pentagonal hole in the center. In spring of 2003, the tokens were phased out in favor of the MetroCard, but the New York Subway Token will remain a symbol of New York City.
